How to Add Personality to a Bland Interior

Does your home feel bland or uninspired? Transforming your space doesn’t have to cost a fortune or require starting from scratch. As an interior designer, I’m passionate about helping people infuse personality and warmth into their homes. Here are some creative ways to add character to your interiors.

Wall Panelling: Add Texture and Charm

Wall panelling can make a significant impact without requiring a complete overhaul. It can add texture and a touch of sophistication to any room. The type of panelling you choose will affect the finish and feel of the space. You could select classic wainscoting, modern shiplap, or a decorative moulding design. Paint or stain the panelling to match or contrast your walls for a polished look.

Wallpaper: Patterns and Prints

Wallpaper is having a moment, and I’m all for it. Wallpaper is extremely cost-effective and fantastic for injecting personality into a space. There’s no need to cover every wall; try a statement wall or a small room (a downstairs loo is the perfect space to have fun with!).

Look for patterns and prints that resonate with you—floral, geometric, or even a bold abstract design. Wallpaper can be a game-changer for adding depth and interest to a room.

Bold Paint Colours: A Fresh Look with Minimal Cost

Paint is one of the easiest, quickest and most affordable ways to refresh any space. Don’t shy away from bold colours or dramatic contrasts. A deep navy or vibrant teal can make any room more inviting and dynamic.

If you’re hesitant, start with smaller spaces like a hallway, bathroom, or an accent wall. It’s a cost-effective way to make a statement and transform the mood of a room.

Artwork: Personal Touches and Fabulous Finds

Art is a beautiful way to add personality to your home. You don’t need to invest in high-priced pieces; instead, explore local flea markets, vintage shops, or online marketplaces for affordable artwork. Look for pieces that speak to you and reflect your style.

You can also frame family photos or create a gallery wall with a mix of prints and personal mementoes. Artwork adds character and can be easily updated as your tastes evolve.

Plants: Bring Life and Colour Indoors

Plants are an excellent way to liven up a space. They add colour, texture, and a sense of calm to any home. If you’re new to plant care, choose low-maintenance varieties. Place them in stylish pots, which I love to search for at thrift stores. Grouping plants can create a lush green corner that brings a refreshing touch to any room.

Statement Pieces: Make an Impact

A statement piece, whether furniture or artwork, can become the focal point of a room. Look for unique finds at vintage shops or flea markets—an antique mirror, a striking armchair, or an eye-catching piece of art can all add depth and personality to a room. Upcycling old furniture with a fresh coat of paint or new upholstery can also create a standout piece that adds charm to your home.

Incorporating these easy and budget-friendly tips allows you to inject style and add personality to a bland interior and pamper your home. Remember, style is not about how much you spend but how you use your space and express your individuality. If you’re hesitant about making decisions on your own and are looking for advice or a helping hand, please get in touch! Every job, big or small, I am here for you.
